Stevie G
God, I hate that nickname-makes him sound like a 80's disco artist! Maybe he does as well?
Undeniably a class player, he "carries" Liverpool at times in the same manner as Maradona used to do at Napoli. How we could do with a player like him or to adopt the role he does at Liverpool for us. Would pick him above any player in Britain at the moment, there might be more "glamour" in Ronaldo or Torres, but Gerrard is so versatile and able to motivate and lead his team, the complete midfield player IMHO.
He has virtually been raised to sainthood by the media and certainly has that status amongst Liverpool fans. So you wonder if the clamour that surrounded Joey Barton, and, many years ago, Bowyer and Woodgate when they were at Leeds will surround him, amongst cries that he should have a long suspension, or even that Liverpool should sack him-if convicted and sentenced as a result of the charge now made.
He hasn't got "previous"-which may stand him in good stead. However, his status and the power he has at Anfield does, I suspect mean that, whatever happens, he and the club try to brush it off internally and very, very quietly indeed-where as I suspect, if it were a reserve player-a Jermaine Pennant perhaps?-they'd use the whole thing as an reason to sack him?
Will be interesting to see how this develops. Wonder if his game will be affected? If anything, after the incident at Leeds, Bowyer was playing the best football of his life, but has never been the same player since.
