He wasn't trying to buy her shares

He was trying to persuade her to create, and then to sell to him, NEW shares. The money from these shares would have gone to the club.

She would have lost control BUT she would still have been left with a substantial shareholding in a club which suddenly had lots of money and might even have had chances of being promoted. Thus she had a choice between a diluted shareholding in a club which was no longer strapped for cash (shares therefore increased in value), or retaining a controlling shareholding in a club with no money, no star players and no great prospects other than avoiding relegation.
