If it's email, then of course it should be personal in a way writing on a website isn't

I avoided Facebook for years, figuring it was a jumped-up, pretentious, American college jock style exhibitionistathon, full of idiot posers showing off and behaving like narcissistic w**kers. I also couldn't for the life of me understand what writing on someone's wall was all about - if you want to talk to them, I thought, just pick up a phone or email them!

Thing is though, I only joined because I got an invite from my brother with whom I've struggled to keep in touch for a couple of years now. So I figured, "ah well - why not?"; and once I joined, found it far more fun and interesting than I'd have ever thought. There's room for anyone on there, basically - and actually, very like this messageboard, there's lots of in jokes and forms of behaviour that wouldn't make sense to a non-member, are off-putting when it comes to first impressions, but make the place tick.

Trust me: I'm normally the last person to ever sign up for something like Facebook (tending to take what Groucho Marx said as my motto for things like that), but have been amazed how much fun it's been. And if I can, anyone can, I'd say.
