All those charges that are being claimed back will mean the end of free banking. In the big scheme of things, getting bank charges refunded will cost in the longer term as the price of other services will go up and interest paid will go down.
I worked in a Lloyds Branch, from 1982-1987. Towards the end of my time at Lloyds, we were putting ad-hoc charges through for all sorts of things, eg enquiries that took a while to resolve, letters from the manager about this and that, and duplicates of statements or getting an cheque out of filing.
I didn’t like what I had to do as the people we charged were the ones that could least afford it.
