I'm afraid, knowing him as I do, you don't surprise me at all.
He does tend to provoke that sort of reaction. He's not a git on purpose, he's just utterly utterly thoughtless.
Mind you, I haven't seen him for a few years, and the last occasion was his wife's funeral, so he may have changed in the intervening period.
