Just as he did at Watford.

Both were false, flattering finishes, based on late-season runs against mid-table teams who had nothing to play for. West Ham were never actually in UEFA Cup contention, so they effectively ended up top of mid-table; and Watford were never in play-off contention either (it was the year when only one went up automatically, and positions 2-5 played off). Both then went down the following season.
