could it be (shock! horror!) that the best available candidates themselvcs aren't going to rush into an appointment, but are going to wait and see what the best option for them is (most of them aren't poor and don't need the money).

Why, for example, would Jewell sign a contract here when the papers are contemplating the Blackburn job (or even at worst the Lecicester job, which I suspect would be more attractive than ours) becoming available soon? If I was him him I'd sit it out and see what happens.
