Very much this. We are doing something different... the alternatives are

fill a team with season pros whose best prem days are beyond them (we don't have the budget) or fill a team with bruisers and play direct (like QPR) and be forever a midtable Champs side with the odd season fighting relegation. We are building a team and style that will, hopefully, given time, be challengers for auto and a base squad for further improvement if promotion follows. Short term pain for long term gain.
