So 78 in a 50 is a band c fine (150% to 175% of weekly income) and either 6pts or a 7 to 56 day disqualification.

Note this is projected if found guilty after a trial - you get 1/3 discount for a guilty plea at earliest opportunity.

If your friend needs his licence for a job he'd be well advised to get a defence solicitor (I used to represent people in these circumstances for a few hundred pound) or write a letter asking for points rather than disqualification. Or he might prefer a short disqualification. Either way write a humble letter expressing his apologies and willingness to learn from his mistakes.
