I've always thought more restorative justice/much more rigorous community service

would deal with a lot of low to medium level antisocial s**t. Jails should be a last resort and those recidivism numbers posted below are grim reading.

Yes jail is to punish but also rehabilitate - otherwise we either lock everyone who does something relatively minor up for life or we accept they will one day walk our streets again and wouldn't it be a good idea to give them the help they need to get past whatever silly thing they've done so that when they come out they live a better life and more crimes aren't committed.

Distinctly unsilly things - serious physical/sexual assault, big frauds, wearing both stripes and spots in the same outfit - deserve significant sentences and in some recent cases I've seen reported I've thought the sentences too lenient; but that's surely quite a small proportion of cases the CPS gets. I'm glad there's to be this review of sentencing and I hope some degree of common sense is allowed into the room.

On this particular case it may well be that the CPS didn't want to be seen to prejudge; but on the facts as far as we know them it's pretty obvious the copper did the only thing he could have in the circs and it's sad that the prosecution went to trial.
