He’s not a deep lying midfielder
He wants the game in front of him all the time. In the deep role you have to be comfortable receiving it with your back to the action and turning and going forward; that’s never been his bag. If we want to be able to quickly transition from defence to attack, we need more players comfortable doing that.
His passing improved a lot under Wagner, but he changed to a role that didn’t truly suit him, and even then, he was most comfortable in between the CBs with everything in front of him, rather than helping with a fast transition.
