I live in France, in the Var department between Marseille and Nice
Avignon is beautiful, Marseille (apart from the Vieux Port area) not so much. I would recommend the following - not in any particular order:
1. The Luberon - area of hills with vineyards and perched villages East of Avignon. It where the book ‘A year in Provence’ was set.
2. Aix-en-Provence - beautiful old university town just along the A8 autoroute about 30 mins from Avignon towards Nice.
3. The Carmargue - wetland area at the mouth of the Rhone famous for its flamingos and wild horses.
4. The Porquorelles National Park, group of islands just offshore between Marseille and Toulon.
5. Mont Ventoux - famous Tour decFrance stage where Tommy Simpson died in 1967.
6. Loads of vineyards, slap bang in Côte du Rhone country.
