When Southgate started he picked the best players for the system, now he seems to have reverted to the classic England manager approach of trying to pick the best 11 players.
It is also damning that we turned up at a tournament without knowing what our best midfield was or how to get the best out of key players.
We might have won last night if he’d been a bit braver in his selections and his tactical approach. Eg if Watkins and Gordon had started, something the Spanish were not expecting to have to deal with.
There’s no doubt Southgate has been a force for good overall but now feels a good time to freshen things up.
