The question should be why were they?

This was not a fancied Spanish team or a team they expected to win this tournament. But they looked a well coached and cohesive unit.

We have been a mess from the moment he named the squad. All over the place in terms of selections and tactics. Playing a formation that got the best out of nobody, we’ve played well in about 45 minutes out of 7 games.

We didn’t deserve to win it but had we played anywhere near our potential we certainly could. Another tournament wasted with Southgate.
