Would be very unsurprising and very typical Southgate

And to be fair he will improve us a bit. A natural central midfielder playing in central midfield will help and he will provide some energy and make us better off the ball.

But at the same time, its an example of the type of footballer Southgate seems to like and value. A hard working, high energy, athlete rather than someone who is going to give us more composure in midfield, dictate the tempo and provide that bit of creativity. the need for that has always been a blind spot for Southgate in my view. I had hoped the inclusion of Wharton in the squad was a sign that was changing but no he defaults to type it seems.

It also doesn't solve the lack of wide threat on the left.

Still we are through and should have enough to win tonight so lets hope that the players can somehow get themselves going and build some momentum.
