Article in the Times today saying the relegation of all three promoted clubs is nothing to

worry about

Mostly guff but this bit annoyed me:

“One of the clubs that have been sanctioned for breaking PSR rules are Forest, whose motivation was assembling a squad that could survive in the Premier League. They did not do it in a particularly coherent manner but the intentions were good. Staying up, moving forward, competing, everything we want from a newly promoted club.

“Norwich City came up in 2018-19 and did not invest. They spent the money clearing debts and developing infrastructure and went straight back down. At the time, it was suggested the strategy was to be in the top 26 teams in the country — either in the Premier League, or relegated again but in the Championship play-offs — and for five of the past six seasons (including this one) it has worked.

“Yet Forest’s way is healthier. Not fiscally — although there has never been a suggestion that the owner, Evangelos Maranakis, cannot afford investment — but in terms of what it delivers to the competition. Forest ended Arsenal’s title tilt last season; they have beaten Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Manchester United in this campaign. Better them than three up, three down.”

This is just such utter bollocks. It suggests (a) that promoted clubs ought to spend £150m+ on new players because it’s *good for the Premier League*; and (b) that Norwich could have done this but chose not to. Both points are utter s**te.

The full article is here though the Times paywall may prevent access Failure of promoted clubs is nothing to worry about (yet)
