currently there is no conscription legislaton in the uk

smaller urgent operational committments requiring increased troop numbers will come from reservists.

should the operational requirement exceed available regular and reserve troop numbers, then if conscription legislation was passed, it would likely be done by age groups to fill gaps in troop numbers so the first tranche would likely be people up to the age of 30 that were medically fit and not in reserved occupations (emergency services nhs etc). thereafter it would increase incrementally to include older age groups probably up to 55. if there was a situation where people over 55 were needed then the game would well and truly be up. absolutley no chance of the play-offs.

when the uk transitions form a peacetime to a wartime footing the "establishment" or numbers of each regiment/unit increases quite a bit so it is a fact that every single unit/regt would be understaffed (there is a percentage of troops that would be medically unfit for example) and i doubt very much that the reservists could fill the gaps. so if we do move to a wartime footing then conscription would be absolutely necessary.
