"As they didn't have valid boarding passes, they were correctly charged the airport check-in fee."

Mr Lloyd denies this, saying: "I can't remember going on the website after I checked in.

So he sort of denies/doesn't remember. Maybe he had a pop-up blocker? But even so, someone must have physically checked out with or without the warning.

But yes, as you say, strange story.
