This is actually a very interesting question.....
With unfortunately a non simple answer.
This has been studied across multiple professional sports over large sample sizes.
The conclusion is the advantage is made up of many components.
The crowd influence is part of it but also the rest component is important in relation to the travel component.
We know the effects are bigger with shorter rest off longer travel for the away side.
Bottom line is we know it exists but we can only assume the reasons.
