To pay their staff after the events, but mostly those people will work for free up to a year before these events.
I've known at least 3 friends learn valuable experience from helping out, but mostly they knew they probably wouldn't or won't see a penny.
And that's what will have happened here, some charlatan has taken a risk free punt at doing this and doesn't exactly leave that much out of pocket.
They'll just move on to their next scam
