The author spent large chunks of time listing brands and lavish descriptions of a luxury lifestyle before then berating the characters and the reader for being materialistic.
For end of the world disasters you'd be better off reading John Wyndham.
For critiques of luxury lifestyles maybe f Scott Fitzgerald.
