Knapper coming in early is clearly a move that is likely to accelerate his departure

The question is, how much time will he give him? Perhaps he will use the international break to get a good feel for what Wagner is doing and what his plan is for turning things round, as well as thinking about replacements. To sack him on your first day would be a hell of a move and i think if that was going to happen Webber would have done it as his final act to save Knapper from having to.
