When Farke left, that's when the rebuild truly should have started. Since Farke was relieved of his duties (correctly I felt) we have kind of drifted from one stop gap to another in Smith and Wagner. I actually don't blame either of those, Wagner less so than Smith. Neither were the right men for the job.

It was clear After Farke the squad needed a full rebuild but we didn't and don't have the funds for it without an ongoing fire sale of any remaining talent we have left on the books. The other problem being the spectre of parachute payments ending and the drop in income that for a club like us makes it very difficult to compete at the top end of the championship, never mind the Premier league.

Looking honestly at our team now and over the last couple of seasons since relegation, we are a Premier league club with a championship playing squad. Since the last relegation, with every transfer window, we have become even less likely to compete at the top end of the table. The entire football operations side of the club has been one patch after another, without anyone making the call to push the reset button. That i guess falls on Webber and the board.

So what next?

Wagner goes and we are still where we are, average players on decent contracts and full rebuild still required. It's not so much now that worries me, its the wilderness that lies ahead probably for another season or so at least, maybe longer if Knapper is unable to make some big calls early on.

I fear that supporting this club is going to be a slog for a while longer yet. Hopefully I'm wrong.
