I’m baffled by the response to all this

The reality is that this could be the new normal. Ukraine could limp on for years, and as long as it does there will be way more demand for gas than there is gas available. Even if Ukraine ends, gas prices were much higher than in the good old days anyway, even before the war. This (or something like this) might just be the new price of gas.

Why aren’t we as a nation (and as part of Europe) scrambling like crazy to do everything we can to lower gas demand, to switch to other fuels and to get more renewables on the grid at the fastest rate we can? We need to give more targeted support of course, but unless we have policies that actually do something about the underlying problem, this could go on for years. Any plan that involves just throwing subsidy at end users will literally bankrupt the country.

We need urgent action on a national energy saving plan, a call to arms for new renewables (green and going forward WAY cheaper than other alternatives) and social policies aimed at avoiding economic/social disaster this winter (probably involving deferral of costs from this year, on the understanding that all the other stuff in the action plan will bring relief down the line).

Why are no policy makers talking about this?
