One way or the other

I think we've come out of this in a reasonable position. Smith seems like a good, straightforward man, and a decent manager. He may bring things we know we lacked - a bit more tactical flexibility in particular; he's experienced in the prem, and with good players, so it should be pretty seamless. I'm pretty sure he'd be "happy" to stay if we go down, and he knows the Champs too. So all in all, leaving aside Farkelove, I'm happy.

The other thing - Villa I think are arguably in a worse position than they were - not at all sure Gerrard will succeed, or upgrades Smith, and many of their fans weren't happy to see Smith go. And that might help us a bit too.
