I don't think you are far off, our style in the champs is to essential make teams too

nervous to get too far up the pitch, so the space we leave is attacked less often.
As its the champs, when it is attacked it often doesn't come off, and if it does come off the chance created is more likely to be wasted.

How many times last season did we say "jesus we were lucky not to concede then" in the Prem that turns in to a goal.

Teams do attack us as well, as we don't have that higher ability level, as you say not as technical, so there is no reason for them to be cautious of us.
Therefore that space gets attacked a lot more often, and by players able to take full advantage.
