I don't think it's that baffling

Bess did lack control throughout (including on that last day). Too many full tosses, long hops etc. He hasn't done enough to guarantee a place, I don't think. So he shouldn't go on strike or anything - just has to keep trying to improve his control. (I don't think there is anything special about Worcestershire players, or that he has anything in common with Hick.)

Not that picking Mo is riskless, obviously - it's a bit of a punt - but with a lot of upside if he performs. Feels worth it to me, because Bess just isn't bowling that well.
