The problem as you say is NY is the epicentre
It’s had 11k+ deaths concentrated into a population of just over 8m. So if that represents 15% infection rate then the mortality rate is around 0.9%
If those 3,000 people were in the worst hit areas that number could be a lot higher.
Minimum 1% is best case I think.
