they can be worn not to filter out anything but to help prevent sub-conscious cross contamination from people inadvertantly touching their on mouth/snouts after tocuhing infected surfaces. the people of china worked this out a long time ago after many rounds of other flu epidemics. hand washing still the best thing aside from moving to antartica and/or become under 8 years old.
