Sorry, how is Sterling offside?

The line is drawn from the defenders feet? Sterling's are behind. If Sterling's shoulder is behind the defenders feet, then isn't the defenders hand playing him onside? The line seems to be completely arbitrary and then not the same for the defender and the attacker. I just cannot see how that is ruled offside.
