Shite season international break statto distraction...

(*incidentally my first Norwich game of this season, as a non-loyalty tax paying lesser fan)

- and in particular these two bits:

"Biggest positive to take
Well we're on course to smash those Crystal Palace losers and take the record outright for the most Premier League era relegations. Up yours Eagles!"

&

"Summary
We're only 4 points adrift with two thirds of the season still to go but it's hard to not assume right now that this is going one way. Michael Bailey speaking on the radio before the game described the "muscle memory" that we have as a fan-base having witnessed a fair few relegations in recent times - we know how it starts, how it looks and feels. It's something we're going to have to make peace with. If the plan is to keep the faith and "do a Burnley", which seems sensible to me, we'll have to take our joy where we can find it along the way."

I was intrigued enough to lift large chunks of Premier League records and stats from this Wiki page:

- to see what else we could aim for/aim to avoid, seeing as it increasingly looks like the main aim of survival will probably be beyond us for a record breaking fifth time...

So, firstly that main one, with us currently sharing the record of four relegations from the Prem with Palace (as Ben mentions), but also with West Brom & Boro (currently in the Champ) & Sunderland (in League One). They've been on a poor run of results just recently, seeing Palace slip to 12th, but we have a greater likelihood of owning that record all for ourselves. Yippee.

A silver lining record that looks beyond our reach is:
Most goals scored in a season by a relegated team: 55, Blackpool (2010–11)

Fewest goals scored at home in a season: 10
Manchester City (2006–07)
Huddersfield Town (2018–19)
We're currently on 10 in 6 games (3 vs Newcastle, 2 vs Chelsea, 3 vs Man City, 1 vs Villa, 1 vs Man Utd & 0 vs Watford), so only need a further goal in 13 games to avoid equalling that one.

Most goals conceded at home in a season (21 games): 45, Swindon Town (1993–94)
Most goals conceded at home in a season (19 games): 43
Derby County (2007–08)
Wolverhampton Wanderers (2011–12)
We've currently conceded 16 in 6 games (1 vs Newc, 3 vs Chels, 2 vs ManC, 5 vs Vil, 3 vs ManU & 2 vs Wat) (which is a ratio of 2.666 recurring), so over 19 games we're on course for 50.666 recurring which would smash even the 21 game record set by one season wonders Swindon, now playing in League Two alongside two season wonders Oldham & Bradford and 49th out of 49 in the all-time PL table. Let's hope that bloody Villa game has skewed the ratio beyond a season's accuracy...

Fewest goals scored away in a season: 8
Middlesbrough (1995–96)
Southampton (1998–99)
Sheffield United (2006–07)
Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on just the 1 in 6 games (1 vs Liverpool, 0 vs West Ham, Burnley, Palace, Bournemouth & Brighton), so a ratio of 0.1666 recurring clocks up just 3.1666 recurring over 19 games and would mean we embarrasingly smash that record to stand limply alone. I wonder if Kensell's data analysts have factored that into the 20/21 taxation schemes...

Most goals conceded away in a season (21 games): 59, Ipswich Town (1994–95)
Most goals conceded away in a season (19 games): 55, Wigan Athletic (2009–10)
We've currently conceded 12 in 6 games (4 vs Liv, 2 vs WHam, Burn & Pal, 0 vs Bourne & 2 vs Bri), so a neat ratio of 2 would result in 38 over the 19 and leave us well safe of troubling one of Ips**t's stars.

Fewest goals scored in a season: 20, Derby County (2007–08)
We've currently scored eleven, so we need ten more goals to avoid sharing that one, so should be able to manage that with two thirds of the season left to play. If our ratio of 0.91666 recurring is maintained then we're on course for 34.8333 recurring.

Most goals conceded in a season (42 games): 100, Swindon Town (1993–94)
Most goals conceded in a season (38 games): 89, Derby County (2007–08)
We've currently conceded 28 in 12 games, so over 38 games we're on course for 88.666 recurring, so here's hoping the return of Zim in the second half of the season can shore things up enough to steer us away from Derby's 38 game record...

Worst goal difference in a season: –69, Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on -17 and using our current averages we're on course for -53.834, so that one should remain with Derby.

Fewest wins in a season: 1, Derby County (2007–08)
Thankfully with two wins on the board already, that one is safely theirs to keep as well.

Fewest home wins in a season: 1
Sunderland (2005–06)
Derby County (2007–08)
Again, both our wins were at home, so safe again.

Fewest away wins in a season: 0
Leeds United (1992–93)
Coventry City (1999–2000)
Wolverhampton Wanderers (2003–04)
Norwich City (2004–05)
Derby County (2007–08)
Hull City (2009–10)
I had an away season ticket for that season, so I know how it feels for those regularly travelling this season. The maths fails here as an unreliable ratio of 0 says we'll be the first to have two seasons in the record books. I'm relying on their being a lack of calculatable data to support this...

Most consecutive games without a win: 32, Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on seven games without a win and with 26 games remaining, the worst that could reach is therefore a new record low of 33. Having just failed to beat the team that had failed to win in the first eleven games, it's difficult not to let pessimism take over... Surely not, though, eh...?

Most consecutive games without a win from the start of a season: 16, Queens Park Rangers (18 August – 8 December 2012)
Thankfully we can rely on their historically 'always' being a s**tter side than yourselves in the Prem, as QPR's record is safe here.

Most defeats in a season: 29
Ipswich Town (1994–95)
Sunderland (2005–06)
Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on 9 defeats in 12, so a ratio of 0.75 means 28.5 and we'd better hope Mario can feed the goat better than he has been recently to avoid stealing another of Ips**t's stars...

Most home defeats in a season: 14
Sunderland (2002–03, 2005–06)
Huddersfield Town (2018–19)
We're currently on 4 in 6 games, so a ratio of 0.666 recurring means 12.666 recurring runs that record too close for comfort. Better get ordering some more banners & flags to happy clap our way away from that one...

Most away defeats in a season: 17, Burnley (2009–10)
We're currently on 5 in 6 games, so a ratio of 0.8333 recurring means 15.8333 recurring and again too close for comfort...

Fewest draws in a season: 2
Manchester City (2018–19)
Tottenham Hotspur (2018–19)
We're currently on just the 1 draw in 12 games (Bournemouth away), so that ratio of 0.08333 recurring has us just miss out on the record with 3.1666 recurring

Fewest away draws in a season: 0, Tottenham Hotspur (2018–19)
Spurs record is untouchable there then.

Fewest home draws in a season: 0
Manchester City (2008–09, 2018–19)
Manchester United (2012–13)
Chelsea (2016–17)
The maths fails here as an unreliable ratio of 0 says we'll equal the big boys record, which is unlikely.

Fewest points in a season: 11, Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on 7 points in 12 games, so a ratio of 0.58333 recurring means just 22.1666 recurring over 38 games; depressingly crap to look at but at least this record should be safe.

Fewest home points in a season: 7, Sunderland (2005–06)
We're currently on 6 points in 6 games, so a ratio of 1 means 19 and safe from this record, if again s**te viewing.

Fewest away points in a season: 3, Derby County (2007–08)
We're currently on just the 1 point in 6 games, so a ratio of 0.1666 recurring means 3.1666 recurring and another of Derby's records is in danger of being matched...

Most points in a season while being relegated:
42 games: 49, Crystal Palace (1992–93)
38 games: 42, West Ham United (2002–03)
Given our low ratio (of 0.58333 recurring) we're unlikely to be topping this record on our way back down.

Fewest points in a season while avoiding relegation: 34, West Bromwich Albion (2004–05)
That projection of 22.1666 recurring falls well short of the safety target and we'd obviously need to be a lot closer to West Brom's total to both survive and take their record. Here's hoping we'll backload our season's tally of points...

And just as an aside to this aside, here's the other places where we pop up in the records:-

Highest finish with a negative goal difference: 3rd, Norwich City (1992–93, –4)

Most individual goal scorers in one game for the same team: 7
Chelsea 8–0 Aston Villa (23rd December 2012)
Manchester City 7–0 Norwich City (2nd November 2013)
Southampton 8–0 Sunderland (18th October 2014)

Most hat-tricks against a single club: 3, Luis Suárez (for Liverpool vs Norwich City)

Most consecutive draws: 7
Norwich City (1993–94)
Southampton (1994–95)
Manchester City (2009–10)
This is a stat I mentioned in my last night shift statto binge session a few months back (regarding unbeaten streaks as at the time we were on one - Those Were The Days, as that lot says); so perhaps a fitting point to wrap this BS up...
