off course the real answer and solution should be

your wife should realise the enormous of the occasion and release you from your obligation to go to theatre and take one of her friends

the down side to this solution is that she would use it as a leverage to get you do what ever she wants you do for the next six months

example can my mother come to stay for the weekend turns into "my mother is staying for the weekend " plus lots of retail therapy

enjoy the theatre

please note the above is only meant to be a light hearted response
