I recommend the film The Barkley Marathons - The Race That Eats Its Young

That's on Netflix. There's also a YouTube doc called something like "Where Dreams Go To Die," which I haven't yet seen, but is supposed to be good.

Nicky Spinks is definitely running this year, can't tell from twitter or Insta (apparently the best ways to keep up to date, so secretive is the race, no media is allowed on the course, press access limited, etc) if the conch has been blown or not. But today is definitely the day.
