This was indeed the case when I had an away season ticket
however, that was well over a decade ago.
I should buy over the phone if I were you, and ask if you can have seats in your preferred area. Worst case is they say, no, sorry we have to sell from the front first, or from the left first, or whatever, in order to send back while blocks of unsold tickets. But if they're confident that they'll sell all the tickets, chances are they'll let you have a choice of area.
