What's the chances of replacing the short term contract?

And what would your buffer period be?
If you can manage your budget to live on similar to what you are now for the life of that contract, that should give you some grace to replace it.
If you manage to do that quickly you should be then be quids in, if not you've got a safety net to tie you over.
