If its a sacking officially that could impact on his CV and his former employers may have to pay him the remainder of his contract. By offering him to 'resign' *cough!* he keeps his CV in tact and his former employers probably pay him much less.... which is their benefit.
Thats the way it works in a few large companies i know of....
