Well, Jim, one part of the magic formula in hiring a top CEO in any sector is...
...paying a price for knowledge, network and ability.
Now I have no idea on the salary being paid to Moxey*, but I do remember indications that it was considerably lower than that paid to McNally. And I do remember the CONSTANT complaints about McNally's salary and bonus structure (during both successful and unsuccessful periods). In any business, the adage about peanuts and monkeys is more often true than not. And yes, I am aware that compared to what we as fans earn, 500k or even 90k is not "peanuts", but relatively speaking, in this industry, if you aspire to the ambition of most of our fan base then it is peanuts. Or at least it is NOT the salary which would attract a top top exec of the ilk we are yearning for. They would simply have more attractive offers elsewhere. It's business.
Admittedly Delia (see The Times) does not appear to share the ambition of the fan base. She is going to show that very soon. Sadly, if she decides to pay for a great one, we will see widespread criticism of the amounts he / she will be paid. Conversely if she goes on the cheap and we get another crap CEO then the fan base will be blaming Delia for lack of ambition.
So basically, if we splash the cash, see it as NCFC investing in a great future and support the new CEO! And if we don't then scale back your expectations and support the new CEO!
* although I did find a quote on an EDP piece when Moxey joined which said "Bottom Line, McNally salary £1M+, Moxey salary £500K !! Everyone happy (except McNally & NCFC supporters)."
