It was cheaper than driving and parking and not much more expensive than going by coach.

Considering the pain in the arse a National Express would be it was worth it.

Heathrow is closer of course so mitigates the benefits a little, but then you avoid the M25 so that's a plus.

As Gob says price is the key. If it compares favorably to driving its worth it. They'll need to be smart with baggage allowance, bearing in mind it'll essentially be a 'connection'.
