A Sunday cricket match years ago
I once scored 38 of 63 all out in a Sunday friendly game for Kenton. Was 20+ years ago, was a late fixture through the fixture conference.
Batted 6, as I was hungover hoped to have a snooze in a deckchair but was in after 20 minutes at 15 odd for 4 to face a rapid left arm over was much faster than most of our first team would normally see. Pitch was a minefield, this was in the days before helmets, ball was flying everywhere.
Didn?t much fancy getting hit so took a guard a yard+ outside the crease which would him up loads so he bowled shorter and shorter as my guard got progressively further down the pitch.
A couple more wickets and I?d scored a few off him and not been hit by a combination of stepping down the pitch or backing away and swaying to avoid the ball.
He?d just got his 5-for in the first ball of the over and then I ended up at his end for his last three balls as the skip said he was taking him off. He was peed off at me for doing what I did so last three balls I gave him the charge. First ball went to 3rd man, first bounce four off the shoulder of my bat, second ball went off my inside edge for four over the keepers head as we almost met in the middle of the pitch. Last ball I luckily anticipated it would be full, otherwise I?d have been wearing a chest high beamer, stood back and smashed it over point for another four. My only reason for this was to try to get as close as I could to the pitch of the ball.
I bashed a couple more fours off some other bowlers and then was caught on the long on boundary. The fast bowler, who was fielding at third man, ran from his position to long-on (this would have been 150 yards) cheering the wicket and giving me a huge old send off.
Didn?t really mind, just relieved I hadn?t been hit and scored some runs and the game would soon be over.
We lost the match, they got runs for around 7 wickets. He was in at the end and was hit on the head by one of our medium pacers.
Game started at 2.00pm, was over before 5.00pm.
