I've been googling. Looks like it could just mean he (or his ancestors) are from Schweinsteig and that means pig-sty.

Though I found someone else saying that Steig is a path up a hill/mountain and so Schweinsteig (as in the place) is the path up which pigs were driven, which must be what you heard
