Cabo de Gata

The places you've mentioned are all geared towards north European holiday makers and expats -- Brits, Germans. If that's what you like, do for it. Mojacar has a very developed but still cute and Spanish-looking old town as well as seaside developments.

But if you want a less developed and perhaps more 'Spanish' break -- although it's still developed and still attracts lots if foreign tourists, this isn't undiscovered country by any means -- aim for Cabo de Gata. South of Mojacar, east of Almeria city. Rugged coastline, great hiking and history, small villages with decent resources but overall protected by National Park status.

Stay in San Jose, biggest town, great beaches, good nightlife in summer - don't get to Bar Jo much before three or four a.m. Or Las Negras. Or crash out on the beach at San Pedro -- but remember to hide all your others first and bring a bong.

Good trips inland:
The Alpujarras - high hills, great walking, classic villages, hordes of hippies living in caves.

The desert round Tabernas - also home to the spaghetti western. Visit film studios. Pretend to shoot Clint Eastwood.

Almeria capital - decent city. Great tapas. Good city beaches. Best coffee in the province. These things matter.

Guadix. Cave houses.

Granada. If you like sitting in te car for a couple of hours.

Have a peek:
