does anyone seriously think the defence hasn't improved?

its not just about the number of goals its when you concede them.

the reason we have conceded more this season is the increased number of 4 or 5 goal thumping but essentially most of those goals don't really matter because they don't cost you any points (if you're already losing 2-0 letting in a third, fourth or fifth doesn't rally alter anything).

We have kept 9 clean sheets this season compared to just 2 last season (and one of those was on the last day against a Villa team apparently determined to lose on purpose to get rid of McLeish). Clean sheets matter a lot because they guarantee you at least a point.
