if he'd come on last night, he wouldn't have been able to play for anyone else in the champs league this season?

Whereas because he didn't, someone else can sign him in January and play him in the competition?

Am assuming this is the reason for him refusing to come on. But haven't actually seen it confirmed anywhere, or even given as the obvious reason for what happened. Is that right?
