I thought that was called "the brain".

I was at a symposium for paleontology a couple of years back and amongst other stuff (such as the way the human brain "wires" itself [learns] post-birth), on interesting fact was that Neanderthals had larger brains than modern Homo Sapiens. Although it was flat tissue and not all whirly-squirly (I think that was the scientific term) like ours which resulted in less surface area and therefore less efficiency / capacity. Or suffern.
