Sad business

The difference between a conspiracy theory and a mystery is that with a mystery anything IS actually possible.

You only have to see the spate of kidnapped children popping up as adults.

She could be alive and yes, her recollection of/association with her old life might be all but crushed now.

That being said, I still think she was probably killed on th night. No solace whatsoever to her poor parents though. And yes, as the father of a girl about her age it does still make me sad.
