wgf500's annual 6 games that sum up our season (that I saw)
1: Scunthorpe away, the initial loss at home to Wotfud was fresh in the midns of fans and some of the initial optimism was stalled. We played well but looked a little toothless up front, Holt was brought on and grabbed the first of our late winners, this early goal for Holt silenced some of his critics and set the tone for our away performances this season.
2. Reading away, playing in front of Sky an issue for St. Paul and the boys? Not a jot of it! The first half of this game was fantastic, the way Norwich attacked was amazing, worthy of any League in the world - and yes I do mean that, the defending was less so, but we looked like we were ready to dish out the hiding we'd been threatening all season (and would see until Scunny at home). We all know what happened, Holty was sent off for a tackle on Harte (who one assumes has left professional football unable to ever play again due to the severity of his injury?), now Norwich of the past would, at 3-1 capitulate spectacularly losing 10-3, not so, we did sit back and bring a defender on but bodies were put on the line and were it not for another dubious decision by the officials could have nicked the game when Chris Martin was hauled over in front of the travelling fans.
3. Sheffield United away, Now it was a toss up between this fixture, Boro away and Burnley, I went for Sheffield United as we ended up winning. The first half of this game was poor (at best) we looked sluggish and were second to everything, Bent, Evans and Ward all should have put away their clear cut chances but luck was on our side and we were still in the game come second half, the magic talk came out and Norwich attacked and moved the ball around with a confidence that was verging on Arsenal arrogance, Crofts popped up with a double (quick mention to the easiest game of the season Barnsley away where he scored the goal of the season FACT) that saw Norwich move back into the top 2. Another reason I chose this macth was to comment of the poor stewarding we've seen this season, the away end had tickets that were double sold, which lead to some upset Norwich fans and some very heavy handed stewards, this wasn't the only place I've been annoyed with the stewarding and I'm sure next season will be similar.
4. Leicester away, a game that realistically few Norwich fans thought we could win so convincingly, Sven's men were on a rich vein of form and were looking to cement their play of charge whilst Norwich were looking to go back into the Automatic spots. We started the game as we meant to go on, passing the ball around the foxes and making them look tired and out of ideas. WE stroked the ball around and threatened with every attack. 3-2 flattered Liecester and combined with the football played makes this my best performance of the season
5. Derby Home, there's tension and there's Norwich-on-the-verge-of-dropping-out-of-the-automatic-spots-to-Cardiff-and-QPR-being-crowned-champions-in-the-last-minute-of-stoppage-time, I cannot understand how people with heart problems watched that game, Norwich played well again but they looked like they were feeling the pressure, Simmo popped up again and grabbed a winner that was on a par if not exceeding the finer things in life
6: Pompey away, What a day, stating with cardiff's capitulation at home to Boro (we all knew Leroy was a yella really) the pub was rocking and as wel made our way into the rather basic Fratton Park more than one canary fan sensed something special was on the cards. The atmosphere (despite what Pompey fans say) was fantastic in the away end and now the team just had to keep their heads and roll over a pompey side with the proverbial nothing to play for. Whitbread, Ward and Holt all came close but ultimatley it fell to Simmo to score the goal that took us back to the promised land. This provided the perfect cap to the perfect season, if there was a tonne of pressure on the players it didn't show a thoroughly professional display that summed up our season nicely.
Yes there were other games that meant a lot (the 2 1p5wich games and Leeds away) but these 6 for me sum up nicely the past season. Everyone at the football club from the board to us should feel proud and enjoy the next couple of months until July when the fixtures come out and we can start being told we'll go straight down.
Well done the Norwich, top Wrothage this year, OTBC
