He could well have pulled the hammy to an extent where overexerting it might cause
a more severe pull, or even a tear.
Have seen it many times in poof rugby. Most recent was on Saturday in London where one of our best players was returning after one week out with a hammy. He lasted about 10 minutes, despite it being strapped up.
A few years ago we had something similar. The guy returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, tearing the hamstring in the process. That was the last thing he ever did in the sport.
