Belated views on last nights game
Managed to find someowhere to park 10 mins from the ground for free, lovely pub alongside the river, quick drink outside in the warm evening sunshine - lovely.
Nice, traditional old ground, nestled amongst terraced houses - not your Coronation Street style ones, but nicer, well kept ones - window boxes, hanging baskets etc. Lots of Norwich fans in the street drinking, enjoying themselves.
Into the ground & onto the terrace. On the whole, fantastic support - superb numbers & very noisy. I did cring though at the constant "scum" chants at Price. This is teh guy who is a Derby player on loan to Brentford and last played for Ipswich several years ago. A half joking one rendition just to make him feel welcome, then fine, but lots of them prolonged chants..........please.
I was stood by Yarmouth Yellows and unfortunately one knuckle dragging of their entourage thought it would be a good idea to welcome Semi's introduction with a racist call. Quality......no, really rate, really impressive.
The game - we held our own for the first half - neither side shaved it I don't think, but we never really looked threatening. I admire Holt's enthusiasm but I dont want to see (or expect our forwards) to be charging back to our left back areas to put in a challenge. The guy looks like he could do with losing a few llbs - I'm hoping that he's just carrying a bit of excess wait from not having had a proper pre season. He was f**ked half way through the 2nd half & couldn't get off the ground to challenge for headers.
I said after Saturdays game that Cody offers nothing but enthusiasm & running around a lot and last night just re-inforced that. One occasion he was through on goal & wanted a billion touches instead of smashing it in - in the end the ball got tangled amongst his feet & the keeper & a defender managed to snuff out the danger. He's very willing but that I'm afraid isn't enough. Hpefully he'll improve but until then I'd certainly play Cureton or Martin ahead of him.
Gill (again) was pretty anonymous. Running around headless chicken style, not good distribution - I susppose he did manage to break up some of their play.
Tudor Jones - you would hope that with his build he would impose himself a bit more on the pitch. His continual hoofs in the 2nd half drew (deserved) derision from the masses. By the way mate, even though you're 7ft tall you still need to jump to win headers.
Spillane - solid enough defending - but do you want that o the attacking threat of Semi - alas neither option will give you both. Oh, and two consecutive foul throws in matches is a disgrace.
Whaley - flattered to decieve - a few good turns of pace & crosses - but not enough. Having said that Spillane did not help much to create space for him & he had little service.
Wes - MOM - was surprised at how much he gets stuck in tackling & passion that he shows. Lots of jinky little runs - again though, no end product - he didn't always have an option though.
Centre backs - couldn't really see their first goal - they were ok - not disastrous - Cort was a handful for them. Askou didn't seem as composed as he was on Saturday.
Drury - better than last Satuday - although still nowhere near the player he was a few years ago.
We looked heaps better when Hughes came on. Was very surprised he did not start last night.
Goalie - ok from what I saw - don't think he was to blame for either goal.
What struck me was that the Brentford players seemd far more committed & up for the game - strong in the challenge, quicker to the ball - generally a lot sharper.
I went with a Brentford fan & I was interested in his view of us as a non Norwich fan. He reckons we have the nucleus of a good team & if Lambert can give us some direction & instill some confidence then we coudl easily climb that league. He was also staggered by or away support for a midweek game.
That is all.
