there are no 'mid-table' teams (in the sense you mean it) at this stage of the season

everyone in the middle of the table still has plenty of time to make the playoffs or, if it goes tits up, get relegated. No-one will have 'nothing to play for' for at least a couple of months yet

Pretty sure we got to within 4 points of the playoffs later than January last season and still nearly got relegated
