Relegation Statistics
I've been looking back at previous seasons - it's not pretty.
After 16 games we currently have nine points. In previous seasons, the following shows which team was bottom after 16 games, the amount of points they had, the amount of points they finished the season with, if they were relegated and number of points the third from bottom team finished the season with.
06/07 Southend, 10pts, 42pts, Relegated, 42pts
05/06 Millwall, 12pts, 40pts, Relegated, 42pts
04/05 Rotherham, 5pts, 29pts, Relegated, 50pts
03/04 Wimbledon, 10pts, 29pts, Relegated, 51pts
02/03 Brighton, 8pts, 45pts, Relegated, 46pts
01/02 Stockport, 8pts, 26pts, Relegated, 49pts
00/01 Huddersfield, 7pts, 48pts, Relegated, 48pts
99/00 Port Vale, 12pts, 36pts, Relegated, 46pts
98/99 Crewe, 11pts, 48pts, Survived, 47pts
97/98 Huddersfield, 8pts, 53pts, Survived, 48pts
96/97 Oldham, 11pts, 43pts, Relegated, 46pts
Basically, it's not looking good. Over those seasons, the average number of points needed to survive is just shy of 47, so we need another 38 points to be there or thereabouts, i.e., 12 wins (or equivalent) from the remaining 30 games. It can be done - Huddersfield did it with less points than we've got in 97/98, but generally, at this stage of the season, most teams have more points than we've got at the moment and the majority of them still go down :S
